Leon will host Chivas de Guadalajara at the Nou Camp for a matchup in Week 16 of the Liga MX 2018 Apertura this Saturday, November 10, 2018. Both teams are historic in Mexican football and have shared several players over the years, here are six players that have represented both teams.
Rodolfo Cota
The Mazatlan native was incredible in net for Chivas in their 2017 Clausura championship season and was a huge acquisition for Leon this season. Cota has been a complete bust for Los Esmeraldas as William Yarbrough is now the starting goalkeeper and a move could suit him well after the 2018 Apertura campaign. The 31-year-old shot-stopper is remembered dearly by Chivas’ fans as he won five total trophies with the team and was named the best goalkeeper in the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League tournament.
Edwin Hernandez
Edwin Hernandez was also part of that five-trophy run for Chivas and before his arrival to Guadalajara was also part of Leon’s historic back-to-back Liga MX title-run from the Apertura 2013 to the Clausura 2014. “El Aris” played with Los Panzas Verdes from 2011-2015, before joining Chivas and also gained promotion with Leon from the Ascenso MX to the Liga MX in the Clausura 2012 season.
Carlos Pena
“Gullit” was really one of the best midfielders in Mexico when he played with Leon as he received consistent callups to the Mexico national team. Pena was a crucial player in Los Esmeraldas’ promotion to the Liga MX and in its back-to-back title run, but was a horrendous signing for Chivas. “Gullit” had a decent debut season for Los Rojiblancos with seven goals in the Clausura 2016, but was completely useless after that. Since leaving Chivas, the 28-year-old has been a journeyman with severe alcoholism problems as he was even in rehab recently.
Jose Juan Vazquez
“Gallito” was able to do pretty much everything “Gullit” did at Leon in about the same timeframe, but was also successful with Chivas and after that as well. Vazquez was a key player in Los Rojiblancos’ 2017 Clausura championship-winning team and went on to win another Liga MX title with Santos Laguna just last season.
Jonny Magallon
Magallon only played with four teams in his extensive playing career and was very successful with both Chivas and Leon. The Jalisco native is a Chivas’ youth product and won the 2006 Apertura championship with his hometown club. Magallon made over 200 appearances for El Rebano Sagrado and went on to make over 80 for Leon from 2012-2016 as he partnered Rafael Marquez in the defense for their back-to-back title run.
Miguel Sabah
The Mexican striker made his Liga MX debut back in 2000 for Chivas de Guadalajara as he had two different stints with Los Tapatios in his 15-year career. Sabah surprisingly only won one Liga MX title in his extensive and successful career and that came with Leon back in the 2014 Clausura.
