This Sunday, November 4, 2018,  the Superclasico in Paraguayan football between Cerro Porteno and Olimpia was played. The game finished 2-2 in what proved to be a thrilling encounter at the Estadio Manuel Ferreira in Asuncion.

The game made global headlines because 14-year-old Fernando Ovelar not only started the game, but also managed to score for Cerro Porteno. Ovelar had made his debut in Paraguay’s top-flight league just a week before against 3 de Febrero at the Estadio General Pablo Rojas.

Ovelar became the youngest player to ever play in the Paraguayan first division and consequently the youngest player to score as well. This would be amazing in its own right to score in a top-flight league at just 14 years old, but the fact that it was in the Paraguayan Superclasico makes it one of the most astonishing things to happen in South American football in several years.

The teenaged forward was born back on January 6, 2004, and should continue to make headlines given the level of play he has shown so far. His grandfather Geronimo also played with Cerro Porteno in the 1970’s and 1980’s and now Fernando has followed in his footsteps at a very young age.
