Club America soared to the top of Liga MX with a 0-0 draw over Cruz Azul and fans are daring to dream of glory. America has not tasted defeat in more than two months and it has scored more goals than any other team in the league. The team has done a great job of sharing the goals around and it is currently surging with confidence. There is still some way to go in this Liga Apertura season, but already America is shaping up as the team to beat.
America and Guadalajara are the most successful teams in the Mexican history, with 12 league titles apiece, and Miguel Herrera’s men must be desperate to move clear of their fierce rivals with a 13th triumph. They have not won a title since seizing the Clausura in 2014 under Antonio Mohamed, and fans had to watch on as Guadalajara won the Clausura last year to equal their record. Yet Guadalajara is now marooned in the bottom half of the table, whereas America is on fire. The best betting sites on the market are clearly impressed and they give it a strong chance of seizing glory this season.
Prior to the Cruz Azul bore 0-0 draw, America delivered a magnificent performance to vanquish Tijuana. Herrera’s team had just 49% of the possession, but it used the ball well and it was clinical in front of goal. Emanuel Aguilera gave his side the lead after just six minutes, and Andrés Ibargüen doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time. America continued to dominate after the break and Diego Lainez wrapped up a fine play with a strike on the hour mark. Herrera must have been equally pleased to keep a clean sheet, as the America defense has been somewhat leaky this season, and it augurs well for the future.
Next up America takes on Toluca in what looks like a huge six-pointer. Toluca now trails America by three points. If America defeats Toluca, it will move well clear at the top. But victory for Toluca would see it close to the top of the Liga MX table.
Toluca has been a great team this season, with 25 points earned through 14 matches. That means it is an extremely difficult match for America to get a result from, but Herrera’s men will be buoyed by their overall form. America has only lost two games so far this season in 14 matches, so it will take a great game for Toluca to add another loss to America.
If one team wins that game next Saturday, it will gain a huge psychological advantage over its rivals and it will surely become the favorite to go on and lift the famous trophy in December. Yet, there is still plenty of danger lurking further down the table. Santos Laguna is on an impressive unbeaten streak. Tigres, the Apertura champion for the last three years in a row, is still just about clinging onto a Liguilla playoff place too and it will be extremely dangerous when if it reaches the knockout phase. It is all, therefore, gearing up for a fascinating denouement to a gripping season and fans will be captivated as they tune in to see who prevails.
