This Monday, October 8, 2018, it was officially announced that Matias Almeyda will coach the San Jose Earthquakes of the MLS next season. The move was a very surprising one as San Jose has been one of the worst teams in Major League Soccer, currently last in the western conference and Almeyda is a high-profile name.

The former Argentina international has had an illustrious playing career and has had a successful managerial career. Almeyda was previously with Chivas de Guadalajara in Mexico and won five titles including the Liga MX 2017 Clausura championship and the 2018 CONCACAF Champions League.

The South American boss also coached River Plate and led the team back to the Argentine first division in his time with the club. Almeyda was recently linked to the Mexico national team and the Costa Rica national team along with some Argentine and Mexican clubs.

The move was shocking, but it will be interesting to see if Almeyda can make an impact on the struggling MLS side. Some of the standouts on the team include players like Chris Wondolowski and Valeri Qazaishvili, but some serious work in the transfer market will need to be made for next season.
