In Week 10 of the Liga MX 2018 Apertura, Monarcas Morelia will host Pumas UNAM at the Estadio Morelos in what could be a very enticing clash. Both teams have had very talented players over the years and there have been a few that have played for both La Monarquia and Los Capitalinos, here are five.
David Cabrera
Cabrera is one of those players that flies under the radar, but he has had a very solid career in the Liga MX that has spanned for a decade. The Mexico City native is a Pumas UNAM youth product and made his Liga MX debut with his hometown team in the 2008 Apertura tournament. Cabrera played with Los Universitarios from 2008-2016 and enjoyed two league titles before being sent to Morelia in the 2016 Apertura season. After a brief spell in Michoacan, the Mexican midfielder returned to Pumas UNAM in the 2017 Apertura and is currently still with the team.
Luis Garcia
“Doctor” is now known for his broadcasting career, but is still one of the best players to have ever worn a Pumas’ jersey. Garcia played with Los Felinos from 1985-1991 and became an icon at the team, leading the Mexico City club to a league title in the 1991 season. “Doctor” played with Monarcas Morelia towards the end of his career at the turn of the century in the year 2000, where he managed to score eight goals in 17 appearances.
Rafael Marquez Lugo
The lesser-known Rafa Marquez is also now enjoying a fruitful broadcasting career, but also scored plenty of goals during his playing career. Marquez Lugo is a Pumas UNAM youth product and scored nine goals in two years to begin his career. The Mexico City native had his best moments at Monarcas Morelia, where he scored nearly 60 goals in two different stints with the team.
Jaime Lozano
“Jimmy” had an extensive playing career from 1998-2013 and he amassed over 150 appearances with Pumas UNAM in that time. Lozano started and finished his career with Los Universitarios, but also had a solid stint with Monarcas Morelia from 2010-2012, where he scored 12 goals in 69 appearances.
Marco Antonio Palacios
“Pikolin” will always be remembered by Mexican football fans, but not for the best reasons as he became a bit of a joke during his playing career. Palacios still did enjoy a fruitful time with Pumas UNAM, where he spent most of his career and was part of four championship teams. The Mexican-centre-back had 283 appearances with Pumas UNAM and just nine with Monarcas Morelia in 2015 before hanging up his cleats.
