This Friday, September 21, 2018, Puebla will host Club America at the Estadio Cuauhtemoc in what should be one of the more intriguing matchups in Week 10 of the Liga MX 2018 Apertura. This matchup has plenty of history and over the years there have been several players that have played for both Los Camoteros and Las Aguilas, here are five.
Jose Daniel Guerrero
Guerrero is the only current player on this list and he is the most notable name on either team that has represented both clubs. “Chepe” started his playing career in 2006 with Atlante and went on to play with Los Azulcremas from the Apertura 2014 tournament to the Clausura 2017 competition. The Guadalajara native has played in 32 league games for La Franja since arriving in the Apertura 2017 and is the team captain when he does play.
Moises Munoz
“Moi” recently officially announced his retirement from professional football and will always be remembered by Club America fans. In his short stint with the Mexico City club from 2012-2016, the Mexican goalkeeper was part of two championship teams and became iconic with a late headed goal in the Clausura 2013 final against Cruz Azul. Munoz finished his career with Puebla and did not have a great time as he made several blunders as Los Camoteros’ shot-stopper.
Luis Garcia
“El Doctor” is another player that finished his career in Puebla and did not really live up to expectations. Garcia played just 66 minutes with Los Camoteros to end an illustrious career with over 180 career goals and several caps to the Mexico national team. The Mexico City native played with America from 1995-1997 and was solid with 39 goals in 78 appearances with Las Aguilas.
Alberto Garcia Aspe
Garcia Aspe is yet another player that hung up his cleats as a member of La Franja, but his time with Los Camoteros was actually pretty memorable. “Beto” scored 29 goals in nearly 100 appearances with Puebla from 1999-2002 and was one of the main players on the team in that era. Garcia Aspe played with Club America 1997-1999 and was less productive with 11 goals in 66 appearances.
Cuauhtemoc Blanco
Like “Beto” Garcia Aspe, “Cuau” also ended his playing career on a high note in Puebla as he led La Franja to a Copa MX title in the Clausura 2015 season before he started his political career. Blanco was at the tail end of his career with Los Camoteros, but was still one of the most entertaining players in the league with his antics and impressive skill. “El Cuau” is one of the most legendary players in Mexican football history and certainly in Club America’s history as he scored over 100 goals in 300 appearances for his hometown club.
