It has been revealed that Alisson Becker was not Liverpool’s preferred goalkeeping target during the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian Alisson has so far started off life at Anfield on a great note. He has managed to keep three clean sheets from his first three League encounters for the Reds.

However, Spanish source AS has since revealed that Alisson was not actually manager Jurgen Klopp’s first-choice goalkeeping target. The German boss had instead been hoping to secure the services of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Oblak has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in La Liga during his time at Atleti, but opted to remain at the Vicente Calderon and signed a new contract with Diego Simeone’s side.

Klopp initially did not want to spend more than £70 million on buying a new goalkeeper. There was even speculation that Loris Karius would remain as first-choice keeper for the start of this season. However, Karius seemed to not get over the emotional turmoil that was caused by his horror-show during the Champions League final against Real Madrid, as he was shaky during pre-season friendlies.

It was after this that Klopp finally made up his mind that he would definitely need a new shot-stopper for this season.

Meanwhile, Simon Mignolet is set to remain at Liverpool. The Belgian had been hoping to leave Anfield in search of regular first-team football. The Sun have reported that the club will not let him leave, as they plan on making him the back-up option for Alisson.
