Newcastle boss Benitez backs defender to make a return to international football

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is backing defender Paul Dummett to make a return to international football with the Wales national team.

The 26-year-old currently has just two caps at international level for the Dragons and decided to take a step back from international football in May after realizing that he was being under utilized by former manager Chris Coleman.

However would Ryan Giggs now at the helm of the Wales national team, Dummett could be re-introduced into their plans.

The Welsh FA will also need to be aware that Dummett is still eligible to switch allegiance to England as he has only represented Wales at youth level as well as in friendlies.

Benitez told the Evening Chronicle: “Yeah. If we analyse his characteristics the main one is his left-foot. There are not too many left full-backs in the market and especially this country.

“Every country has their own problem. Paul is somebody who has experience in the Premier League and can do well. He can play in a position that is difficult to find players.

“So it will be an option for them. We will see what he wants to do in the future but he’s a player you can trust.”
