Tim Cahill has revealed that he quit Everton in 2012 in order to prolong his international career.
The former Toffees fan-favourite ended up leaving Goodisan Park in order to link up with Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.
At 38-years-old, he still plays international football for his native Australia and played a huge role in helping his country qualify for the 2018 world cup.
He is also likely to be part of the Socceroos squad that will travel to the world cup this summer.
Cahill made a return to former club Millwall last month in order to remain sharp ahead of the world cup. He has said that he quit Everton because of the relentless schedule.
“That was the conversation I had with David Moyes when I left Everton,” says Cahill. “I said if I stayed I’d have to retire at 35, and not play for the national team anymore.
“I knew that, because there’s too many games. I made a decision that was best for both. I’ll never give up on the national team.”
