Everton star Wayne Rooney has backed Harry Kane to be appointed as England national team captain on a permanent basis.
Since taking over the England national team, Gareth Southgate has yet to appoint a permanent national team captain and may need to do so before the 2018 World Cup.
Current contenders for the position include Kane’s Spurs team-mate Eric Dier as well as Jordan Henderson and Gary Cahill.
Rooney has experience captaining the Three Lions having captained the side following the retirement of Steven Gerrard. He also led the nation at Euro 2016 and feels that Kane is perfectly suited for the captaincy.
He said: “I played with him a few times for England and his mentality is that it hurts when you don’t win. You can’t say that about all the players.
”He really wants to win, he wants to score goals and he wants to improve. He is the natural leader now in that England team.
