West Ham may have to splash £40million on top midfield target by summer

According to Portuguese outlet A Bola, Chinese Super League outfit Tianjin Quanjian recently had a £40million offer knocked back by Sporting Lisbon for the services of William Carvalho.

West Ham remain keen on the 25-year-old, and while Sporting’s insistence not to let him go at the moment is as a result of the club’s league ambitions this term, they have also demonstrated how tough their stance is over a possible sale.

The Hammers tabled a bid of £25million for Carvalho last summer, but the Portuguese giants firmly held out for £38million.

It’s expected that they return with another improved bid by summer after both sides made up following the bitter row that ensued post-negotiations, but it definitely has to be close to what the Chinese are offering.

Carvalho is set to play a huge role for Portugal at this summer World Cup, and an impressive outing from the player and country could even see his asking price further skyrocket.

West Ham can sure do with another defensive midfielder given their lack of quality depth and top experience in the department, and Carvalho without a doubt ticks all the boxes.
