As per Spanish outlet Sport, Newcastle United are keen on completing a late winter move for Espanyol goalkeeper Pau Lopez.
The 23-year-old Spaniard has just until summer before his current deal expires, but is said not to be keen on returning to the English topflight following a disastrous loan spell at Tottenham last season.
Lopez didn’t make a single first team appearance for Spurs, but has since reestablished himself in the Espanyol team, making 19 La Liga appearances till date.
A new goalie has been on the Toons’ radar since they returned to the Premier League, and the Spanish presence at the club’s coaching department could influence Lopez.
However, he would most likely want guarantees over a starting berth before considering a move having already secured one for himself back home.
The youngster will be an upgrade on the duo of Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot if signed up, and could be a quality long-term addition.
Newcastle could still return for Lopez when he becomes a free agent by summer, but his Tottenham nightmares could scare him as far as the EPL goes.
