Liverpool’s Joel Matip has hit out at his side for their poor defending at times and at the same time, taken a swipe at himself for his own performances.
The Reds followed up their shock Premier League defeat at the hands of Swansea last week with a fourth round FA Cup elimination at the hands of struggling West Brom on Saturday.
Matip spoke to Liverpool’s official website after the game and said: “We started in front, our offensive play was okay, but in the defence we had problems.
“Mistakes like my one kill every team. This mistake cannot happen, I have to clear this ball. In the first half, [conceding] three goals, it hurts every team. It was really hard to come back then.
“We have to do everything to turn things [around], to get in better shape and get better results.”
Despite showing good signs in attack this season with Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino in good form, Saturday’s performance was good enough and raises questions about whether the current Reds squad have enough talent to go on and win major trophies.
