Celtic man makes u-turn on purported January transfer move to England

Celtic vs Hearts

Danish club FC Midtjylland has confirmed the loan signing of Celtic centre-back Erik Sviatchenko, ending speculations linking him with a move to England.

Having fallen out of favour at Parkhead, the 26-year-old was certain to leave this window, with the arrival of Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig proving to be the final nail in the coffin.

However, a return to Denmark wasn’t really on the cards despite him being linked with FC Copenhagen.

Sviatchenko preferred a move to the English Championship, and did reveal: “Copenhagen are a big club so I don’t want to rule anything out – but the priority for me is to stay abroad.

“I feel that I have a lot to contribute and it’s an exciting challenge to be abroad compared to the Super League. I can see myself at a Championship club, for example.

“It’s a bold league where there are a lot of cool matches. It could also be a springboard for the Premier League.

“I’m 26. I’m on my way to my best football age and I want to play somewhere where I can get responsibility.”

Due to an injury he picked up in August Champions League qualifiers, Sviatchenko spent the first 3 months of the campaign on the sidelines.

The Denmark international lost his spot in the squad as a result, failing to make a single league appearance till the winter break.

Sviatchenko returns to FC Midtjylland exactly 2 years after he first arrived Parkhead, and while the initial deal is to the end of the campaign, it’s hard to see him return with the Danes likely to make it permanent.
