Southampton have recently seen erstwhile captain and centre-back Virgil Van Dijk become the most expensive defender on the planet following his £75million move to Liverpool, and the Saints want a replacement.
As per the Daily Record, Celtic defender Erik Sviatchenko is wanted by the Premier League outfit, while Danish outfit Copenhagen are preparing a £1.5million bid.
The 26-year-old is clearly out of favour at Parkhead, and manager Brendan Rodgers has told him he’s free to leave.
With £75million burning a hole in the pockets at Saint Mary’s, Celtic could get a better deal for the £3.5million-rated Sviatchenko than what his country’s club are offering.
Partly owing to injuries, the former Midtjylland star has played no league game this term, and the arrival of Marvin Compper from RB Leipzig means he is definitely better off leaving.
Summer bids were knocked back for Sviatchenko as the club couldn’t land a replacement on time, but all is set for his eventual exit, and with Southampton keen on doing business, Celtic could be a willing suitor.
