Nicholas explains why Barkley will not join Chelsea

Charlie Nicholas has played down the chances of Chelsea landing Everton midfielder Ross Barkley during the January transfer window.

Barkley was on the verge of joining Chelsea during the summer transfer window and underwent a medical with the club before he had a change of heart and opted to remain at Goodisan Park.

The England international’s current contract with the Toffees will expire at the end of the season and he will have to be sold during the January transfer window or else he will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Nicholas does not believe that Barkley would fit into the Chelsea team given the talent that they have.

“The suggestion was he went to Chelsea last time and he wasn’t really interested,” Nicholas said.

“It tells its own story. You have to get that desire that says he can fit in there. He hasn’t learned the no10 properly yet. He’s not sure it’s him.

“Chelsea have Fabregas. Not for me. I don’t see that [Chelsea move].”
