The Sunderland Echo has reported that Newcastle outcast Jack Colback has been offered to Sunderland.
Colback does not have a future with the Magpies and has been informed that he is free to leave the club during the January transfer window.
It is understood that the player is keen on returning to Sunderland as he does not wish to leave the region.
The Black Cats meanwhile will be looking to reinforce their side during the January transfer window in order to avoid being relegated to League One.
Colback however is said to earn in the region of £40,000 a week and he will have to be willing to take a wage-cut or else cash-strapped Sunderland could have major problems as they try to sign him.
Several clubs have been linked with the signature of Colback in recent months including Leeds United, Derby County, Bristol City, Reading, Wolves and Hull City.
