Rangers have put their managerial search on hold until January, with development squad boss Graeme Murty still in charge in the interim.
The 42-year-old has done pretty well thus far, losing just 3 of the 9 games he has overseen and winning the other 6.
However, Kilmarnock star Gordon Greer believes the side’s manager Steve Clarke would have been the top manager Rangers so desire after they missed out Aberdeen’s Derek McInnes.
The one-time Premier League Manager of the Month, who had managerial stints at West Bromwich Albion and Reading, was once tipped to replace erstwhile Gers boss Pedro Caixinha prior to the Portuguese’ sacking.
However, Kilmarnock appointed Clarke just a matter of days before Rangers’ decision to let Caixinha go.
The Rugby Park club were in the drop zone prior to the arrival of the 54-year-old, but a win over Hearts and draws against Rangers and Celtic helped them steer clear of danger.
Speaking to the press recently, Greer, 36, reckons the Lights Blues missed out on a great opportunity.
In his words when asked if Rangers had missed an opportunity to bring in a top class manager, he said: “Definitely. I think so. The gaffer has got fantastic pedigree. He has worked with some of the biggest clubs in England and with some great clubs and top players as well.
“When we appointed Steve Clarke here we were as surprised as anybody. It is a great appointment and credit to the club for it.
“Rangers is one of the biggest clubs in Scotland, but if you look at the clubs he has worked with down in England you can see he has worked with some of the top clubs down there. I don’t think he would have been fazed by it at all.
“Respect is earned. But when somebody like Steve Clarke comes in he does earn your respect because of what he has done in the game. You tend to listen. He has had some great ideas and it has been good to work under him.
“We were in a predicament where we were down near the bottom of the league. Now we are in a better situation. But we are still striving to be even better and get away from the relegation zone and be in touch with the clubs above us. He is ambitious as a coach. You can see that.”
