Toon legend Shay Given has said that Newcastle could win the Premier League if manager Rafa Benitez is given the right investment from any new owners.
Current owner Mike Ashley put the Magpies up for sale in October and Amanda Staveley’’s PCP Capital Partners Group are currently the frontrunners to complete a takeover.
Recent reports have suggested that Ashley rejected a second offer of £250 million from Steveley.
Ashley’s tenure as owner of the club has been marred by controversy and he has often been criticized for failing to invest enough money for the club to make transfers.
Given believes that should an ownership change take place, it could be a landmark moment in the club’s history.
Speaking to Starsport, he said: “If they get the right investment, hopefully Rafa can strengthen in January – that will be hugely important. If they don’t then they could be under a bit of pressure.
“Rafa has even quoted himself saying he wanted players in the summer but didn’t get the money from Mike Ashley again.
“This takeover deal needs to happen in the next few weeks so he can get the right backing in January.
“I do believe they can get back up challenging for the Premier League and Champions League football. It’s a great stadium, the fans are unreal and it’s a big club.”
