Ex-Referee has said that Liverpool man should have been sent off against Stoke

Former referee Dermot Gallagher has said that Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet should have received a red card during his sides win against Stoke City this week.

Mignolet committed a foul on Mame Biram Diouf just outside of the box during the game and only received a yellow card though many have argued that it should have been red.

The Reds went on to win the game 3 -0 through a brace from Mohamed Salah as well as a strike from Sadio Mane.

Many Stoke fans were gutted that Mignolet did not see red when he clearly denied them off a goal scoring opportunity.

Gallagher spoke about the incident, saying, “A yard the other way and it might have been the right decision, but it’s a red card because it’s outside the penalty area.

“It doesn’t fall into the line of the ‘double jeopardy’ rule. It’s a foul and has stopped him from going through. Diouf had the ball at his feet, one more step and he can roll it into the net.

“The fact Joe Gomez is there is a red herring because he would never catch him. It has to be an obvious goalscoring opportunity, and it was.”
