Leaving West Ham during the last January transfer window could prove to be a career suicide for France international Dimitri Payet in the long run.
While the Hammers raked in £15million profit after reselling the 30-year-old to Marseille, the French outfit will first be left ruing selling him for £10million initially and now having an underwhelming performer on their hands.
Payet has hit an all-time low this campaign, providing just 3 assists and a goal thus far.
Despite being Marseille captain, he is no longer guaranteed a starting place in the starting XI and will likely not be going to the world cup next year.
From a spot on the PFA Team of the Year following an impressive campaign with the Hammers – which resulted in 9 goals, 12 assists and a 7th place finish for the club – to a spot on the Marseille bench, Payet’s career has nosedived, and his decision to force an exit 10 months killed his chances of becoming a Premier League legend.
He remains in the bad books of his former club’s fans, while he hasn’t exactly warmed himself into the hearts of his new fans either.
Understandably, the French forward wanted to return home and to a club he holds dear to his heart, but he ruined his reputation at east London with the way he went about things, just months after he had completely won everyone over and resuscitated his international career.
Alas, Dimitri Payet might have also ruined his football career with that harsh unpopular decision to prematurely call time on his West Ham career.
