Liverpool to face competition from Manchester City in the race for top target

Manchester City have joined Liverpool in the chase for Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, according to the Daily Mirror.

Leon Goretzka is into the final year of his current deal with Schalke and the promising German midfielder has made his desire to leave at the end of his contract very clear to everyone associated with the club.

As a result a host of teams have been sent to red alert in race to sign Goretzka and Liverpool are believed to be especially interested in the midfielder, due to their possibility of losing Emre Can at the end of his contract this season.

Many had believed Goretzka would be signing a pre-contract deal with Liverpool in the January transfer window before joining the Reds at the end of the season, but looks like there is a new twist in the form of Manchester City.

The Citizen are also believed to be interested in the 22-year-old and the Sky Blues will possibly give tough challenge to Liverpool in the race for the German international.

City currently have an ageing first team midfielder which consists of the likes of Yaya Toure and Fernandinho and blooding in youngsters such as Goretzka would certainly be the way to go for the Citizens.
