Chris Coleman has opted not to stay on with the Welsh national team and has instead joined Championship strugglers Sunderland on a two and a half year deal.
“It’s an honour to be appointed the manager of Sunderland and I’m over the moon that the club believes I am the right man,” Coleman told the club’s website.
“The club worked incredibly hard to make sure we were a good fit and to show me the potential that can be achieved here.”
Coleman’s deal with the Welsh national team was set to expire following their 2018 World Cup campaign.
Despite the fact that the nation failed to secure qualification for the World Cup in Russia next year, many fans and players had wanted Coleman to remain as manager.
The Black Cats have been struggling since they were relegated from the Premier League last season and are languishing at the bottom of the Championship standings after taking just 11 points from 17 games.
