Hibernian midfielder John McGinn pulled the strings in midfield for Scotland against Netherlands during weekend’s 1-nil friendly loss, and his splendid performance impressed BBC pundit Michael Stewart.
The former Manchester United midfielder believes McGinn is being keenly monitored by Celtic, recommending him and giving the Easter Road midfielder his personal seal of approval.
The 23-year-old has already shown the Hoops what he’s capable of first-hand, bagging a brace against them during a 2-all draw last term.
Stewart claimed in his Scottish Sun column that McGinn is a blend of Celtic skipper Scott Brown and midfielder Stuart Armstrong.
“I don’t think it was a coincidence John McGinn wore Scott Brown’s No.8 shirt against the Netherlands,” he wrote.
“Because if he keeps going the way he is I can eventually picture him doing the same for Scotland and perhaps even Celtic further down the line.
“So it would not surprise me in the slightest if Celtic are keeping a very close eye on John right now. But you look at Brown and John McGinn and the similarities are there for everyone to see.
“Right now John is a blend of a young Brown and Armstrong. He’s got the legs and the dynamism of Armstrong, but the dig and tackling ability of Broony.”
McGinn has been in fine form since helping Hibs return to the Scottish Premiership last season, scoring 5 goals and laying down 10 others across all competitions in the end.
This season, the St Mirren youth product has continued his brilliance, registering 3 league goals and assists apiece.
With Brown approaching the twilight of his career, McGinn seems a perfect long-term replacement, and should he remain consistent, he could be succeeding the 32-year-old at both Scotland and Celtic.
