Newcastle reportedly make Championship club skipper top January target

According to The Northern Echo, Newcastle have eyes on Fulham’s midfielder Tom Cairney ahead of the January transfer window, and manager Rafa Benitez has made the £20million-rated Englishman his top target.

The Toons saw a summer bid for the 26-year-old knocked back, with Cottagers boss Slavisa Jokanovic hoping that his skipper could help aid the side’s promotion ambitions.

However, Fulham are currently 17th on the Championship log, and might decide to cash in on Cairney, whom injury has limited to just 7 league appearances, in January.

He has found the back once on one of those occasions, while he registered 10 all-campaign last term.

For a Newcastle side struggling to score and create chances, the former Hull City represents a necessary addition to their midfield.

11 EPL games to Cairney’s name might not mean much, but his with 226 Championship outings suggest he has ample of experience.

Should the Magpies land their man, a top-half-of-the-table finish could be achieved with his contributions.
