Ex-Everton man says reputation of top managerial target makes him unfit for the job

Everton are still in search of the right man to succeed Ronald Koeman, with Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone the latest name to be linked with the Goodison Park job.

Former West Ham, Sunderland and Crystal Palace boss Sam Allardyce is also routinely linked, although he has since denied getting in touch with Toffees’ owner Farhad Moshiri regarding the job.

The 63-year-old remains the bookies’ favourites, but former Everton midfielder Leon Osman believes appointing him would pass for a panic signing.

Having aimed at a top 6 finish at the start of the campaign, the Merseysiders have now found themselves in an early relegation battle as they are just 2 points adrift the relegation places.

Big Sam has recently become famous for helping clubs survive the drop, guiding the Black Cats and Eagles to safety in the last 2 seasons.

Osman doubts if the former England manager has what it takes to take Everton to the top, saying on BBC Radio 5 live: “I’m not sure it’s panic time just yet regards to getting in Sam Allardyce but I’m not the guy in charge.

“Sam Allardyce is a guy who you bring in to shore up the gaps and make sure teams don’t go down. He’s developed that type of reputation.

“Whether he’s the guy who can take your team into the top six, which only three or four months ago Everton were trying to do, will remain to be seen.”

Burnley boss Sean Dyche, Marco Silva, and Thomas Tuchel have also been linked, but it remains to be seen who will be eventually appointed.
