Champions League-winning legend says this Celtic star is to blame for UCL failure

Celtic vs Hearts

Having fallen to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich on Tuesday night, Celtic are now left to fight for the Europa League round-of-32 spot with bottommost Group B side Anderlecht.

The Hoops are with 3 points after 4 Champions League group games, as losses to PSG and Munich killed their chances of progressing to the round of 16.

Celtic gave the Germans a hard time as they took the game to them at Parkhead, but the visitors’ opening goal made going for a win an insurmountable task.

The goal came about as a result of a defensive mixup from the hosts, and while manager Brendan Rodgers put the blame on Dedryck Boyata for not using his head to clear the danger on time, Champions League-winning centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes goalie Craig Gordon should shoulder the responsibility.

The Manchester United legend told BT Sport (via Scottish Sun): “The keeper’s killed them really. This may be handball but if he stays in the goal, he [Coman] has still got to beat another defender.

“There’s a foot race on and then he’s got to go past the keeper as well. So the keeper’s kind of made it easier for the forward there.”

A win against Bayern would have given Celtic a lifeline as they would have gone level on points with the Bundesliga giants.

However, their chances went down the drain the moment Gordon decided to come off his line.

The Scotland internationalist goalie isn’t to be blamed for Celtic’s overall woeful form in Europe, though, as both Bayern and PSG are actually miles ahead of them in terms of quality.
