Rangers stumbled to yet another disappointing loss on Sunday, missing out on a big chance to win silverware following the 2-0 loss to Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semifinal.
Manager Pedro Caixinha’s job isn’t the safest in the world, with many of the belief that he could be shown the exit door before the end of the season.
The Portuguese was appointed in March following the dismissal of Mark Warburton, but former Celtic midfielder Kris Commons is of the opinion that his opposite number at Aberdeen Derek McInnes would have been a better option by far.
Commons wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Brendan has said Derek McInnes would be an ideal Scotland manager but I think Rangers missed a trick by not taking him to Ibrox when they hired Pedro Caixinha.
“I’m pretty sure the Rangers job would be one Derek would not be able to turn down if it came along.
“But Derek is a man in demand in England because of what he has achieved at Aberdeen. He turned down Sunderland in the summer and English clubs are still watching his work. Win against Celtic on Wednesday and bigger clubs could swoop and lure him away.”
Since arriving at Pittodrie Stadium in 2013, McInnes has proved his managerial nous, leading the Dons to a runners-up spot on the league table in the last 3 campaigns.
Aberdeen are on path to finishing at least in 2nd place again, as they are level on points with Celtic at the top of the log, 6 clear of struggling Rangers.
While the 46-year-old is being tipped by many for the Scotland job, it’s highly unlikely that he would be keen on leaving club football right now.
Should Derek choose to leave the Dons, chances are that he would prefer a job in the English Championship, with managing at the Premier League a very likely dream of his.
Rangers’ chance to have him on board appears to have passed, and they would have to look elsewhere for a great manager once they part ways with Caixinha.
