Liverpool receive a huge boost in their pursuit of Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool have received a boost in their chase of Southampton defender Virgil Van Dijk after Barcelona pulled out from the race for the Dutch defender, according to the Daily Mirror.

Southampton star Virgil Van Dijk has been linked with a move away from the St. Mary’s Stadium following a successful spell with the English outfit over the past few seasons and many top teams across Europe are currently trailing the defender.

Liverpool are said to be favorites to land the Dutch international but other big teams such as Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester United are also said to be interested in signing the defender.

This list of top sides trailing the Dutchman had led many to question Liverpool’s ability to land van Dijk as all of the aforementioned clubs offer better possibilities to the defender of winning trophies than the Reds but recent reports suggesting that the withdrawal of interest from Barcelona have boosted the Merseyside club’s bid to acquire the towering ex-Celtic star.

The newspaper outlet Mundo Deportivo reported that Blaugrana technical director Robert Fernandez does not have enough faith in Van Dijk’s ability to succeed with the Catalan side and hence, Liverpool will not have to compete with the La Liga giants in order to sign their coveted target.
