Newcastle United star explains how Sunderland made him a better player

Newcastle’s Javier Manquillo has said that experiencing relegation with Sunderland last season has made him into a better player.

The 23 year old spent last season on loan with the Black Cats from Atletico Madrid and the club went on to have a disastrous season, finishing the Premier League in last position and being relegated to the Championship.

Though Manquillo was not regular featured for the Sunderland side during the first half of the season, he feels that he began to gain “continuity” towards the second half of the campaign. His performances eventually earned him a move to Newcastle ahead of this season.

Manquillo said, “I like to keep a positive outlook on every experience. At the end of the day, they’re all experiences which help you grow.

“At Sunderland, I wanted to play football, to consolidate myself as a Premier League player, and towards the end of my loan spell there, I began to find that continuity I was looking for.”
