Former Everton attacker set to challenge for prestigious role

According to American source Sports Illustrated, former Everton star Landon Donovan is considering a run for the US Soccer presidency.

Should Donovan who is the all-time tied record scorer for the United States along with Clint Dempsey run, he  will challenge Sunil Gulati who has held the position for 12 years and who has never been opposed during any of the previous three elections which he has run.

Other people who have expressed interest in running are Boston based attorney Steve Gans and Springfield, Massachussets businessman and soccer entrepreneur Paul Lapointe as well as former US soccer star Eric Wynalda.

Gulati has come under intense scrutiny since the US failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup which marks the first time that they will miss the tournament since 1986.

Though he has not indicated whether he will be running for the presidency again, he has refused to resign.
