Leeds’ 1-0 loss to Reading last weekend was their 4th Championship loss of the new campaign – their 3rd successive defeat, and a lot of supporters and pundits are demanding for massive changes from manager Thomas Christiansen.
The midfield selection of the Spanish boss has come under scrutiny, and it’s likely different players are lined up against Bristol City.
Goalkeeper Andy Lonergan replaced fellow summer arrival Felix Wiedwald in the starting XI for the Reading game, and despite conceding a late goal, many adjudged him to have done better than his German counterpart would have done.
Former Leeds player and manager Eddie Gray is of the opinion that Lonergan should retain his spot as a result of his brilliance in goal.
The 33-year-old former Wolverhampton Wanderers shot stopper was handed his league debut following some unconvincing goalkeeping from Wiedwald.
Gray told Yorkshire Evening Post of Christiansen’s surprise decision to change his first choice goalie: “It was the right decision. I’ve heard people say it was a big decision but to my mind it wasn’t.
“If you’ve got an outfield player who isn’t performing, you leave him out. That’s why you’ve got a squad.
“Thomas had to make that change and Lonergan did well – certainly well enough to stay in the team.”
It’s believed changes to the starting XI would help Leeds return to winning ways, and having Lonergan, who was at Elland Road between 2011 and 2012, manning the goal could help inspire the defence into putting in better performances going forward.
