Plenty of Liverpool fans will surely be angry given that referee Martin Atkinson will referee the weekend clash between the Reds and Manchester United.
Atkinson infamously handed a red card to Liverpool club legend Steven Gerrard in 2015 during a match against United.
Gerrard was obviously not happy with the decision and later went on to claim in his autobiography that Atkinson was the one referee whom he “could not stand.” In total, he has also refereed three games between the two sides, with United being victorious in all.
Atkinson also refereed Liverpool’s League Cup semi-final exit at the hands of Southampton in January and was criticized for failing to award the Reds a penalty as a result of Shane Long’s handball.
Going into the game, United will be the favorites given that their form is better and the appointment of Atkinson as referee for the game will not do Liverpool’s chances any good.
