Netherlands vs Sweden Match Preview
The Netherlands are not technically eliminated from a chance at a spot in the next World Cup but realistically cannot get a second-place finish even with a win from this game. Holland is currently third in Group A with 16 points and a goal differential of 7 while Sweden is in second with 19 points and a goal differential of 19. It seems inevitable that Oranje will miss its first World Cup since 2002 and quality players like Arjen Robben, Virgil van Dijk and Memphis Depay will not be seen next year in Russia.
Some blunders that seriously hurt the Netherlands in these qualifiers include two losses against France and a loss against Bulgaria. This is a very winnable game for Dick Advocaat’s side but it is highly unlikely that the win will cover the massive difference in goal differential to Sweden.
Sweden has been a surprisingly great team in these qualifiers still finding success after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s retirement from international play. Players like Marcus Berg, who has eight goals in these qualifiers and Emil Forsberg, who has four goals in this competition have attributed a great deal to Sweden’s success. The Nordic side has outscored its opponents 12-0 in its last two games, which has turned out to be a huge reason why the Blue-Yellow is practically guaranteed a first or second-place finish. This should be a very intense match and both teams will look for the three points, Sweden should be especially motivated since it can still obtain a first-place finish in Group A if France cannot defeat Belarus.
