Match Preview

The United States has easily been the most disappointing team in these CONCACAF qualifiers, currently fourth on the table with nine points. Honduras is breathing down the American’s necks in fifth place just behind on goal differential and this is a must-win game for Bruce Arena’s side. The United States has not won in three consecutive games, most recently coming off a 1-1 draw against Honduras and needs to get wins in these last two games.

Mexico has clinched a spot in the next World Cup while Costa Rica has already clinched at least a spot in the inter-confederation play-offs. The last time these two teams played it was a 1-1 game, the Americans cannot afford to repeat that result and should go in hungry for the three points from the game.

Panama will be just as eager to come away with at least a point from the game, currently holding a direct World Cup spot in third place with 10 points. La Marea Roja has only lost one out of its last five games, recently coming off a dominant 3-0 win against Trinidad & Tobago.

While there are a few MLS players on Panama’s roster, the United States does have the better players that should be able to win this game. The game should be a hard-fought duel as both teams are motivated to get the three points from the match but the home-field advantage may be the deciding factor in the game for the Americans.
