Former Liverpool and England national team striker Rickie Lambert has retired from professional football. The 35 year old, who was a member of England’s 2014 World Cup squad, has been without a club since leaving Cardiff City in January.
Lambert scored more than 200 goals during his career and the highlight of his playing days came during the 2013-14 season when his impressive displays for Southampton earned him a move to Liverpool and won him a place in the England squad.
During his one season with Liverpool during the 2014-15 term, Lambert was unable to deliver and only scored three times from 36 appearances in all competitions.
Lambert confirmed his retirement from the game on Monday, saying, “I have had some ups and downs in my career, but to have represented clubs like Southampton, Liverpool and playing for my country in a World Cup were beyond my wildest dreams.
“Playing and scoring for England is probably my proudest professional moment, and I will look back at every aspect of how I got there with fond memories.”
