Former Wolves striker Kevin Doyle has retired from professional football following repeated incidents of concussion.
The 34-year-old was last on the books of American club Colorado Rapids and made the decision after engaging with consultants.
Doyle arrived at Wolves ahead of the 2009/10 season for £6.5 million and was the club’s record signing. He went on to score nine goals from 34 matches and helped the team to avoid relegation from the Premier League. He left the club in 2015 to join MLS side Colorado.
Doyle took to Twitter and tweeted a picture of a statement that he made announcing his retirement from the game. In the note posted, he revealed that heading the ball had become a problem recently due to his problems with concussions.
He added, “This year been clear to me that heading the ball was becoming problematic and causing me to have repeated headaches. Two concussions this season and numerous others over the years have made this more concerning.”
