Newcastle secured the signings of 5 new players over the summer transfer window, and despite initial fears over their ability to prove their topflight credentials, last season’s Championship winners have managed to pick up 3 wins in 6 games thus far.
The Magpies seem more than capable of maintaining their Premier League status at the end of the season, and there is even belief in some quarters that they could end up in the top half of the table.
However, Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher thinks Newcastle’s lack of investment will make such mission difficult to accomplish.
The ex-England international claims the low quality of signings the Magpies have made means attaining the status of being a force to reckon with will be hard for the club to achieve.
Carragher told Monday Night Football: “You can’t turn Newcastle into a force if you’re buying players like Joselu, who was a squad player at Stoke who Newcastle are probably going to rival this season, maybe in the bottom half of the table.”
A lack of funds limited manager Rafa Benitez’s spending power during the window, and if the club will decide to splash the cash in order to challenge for a top 10 spot going forward remains to be seen.
If not, they are bound to keep challenging for a higher spot on the bottom half of the table like Jamie fears.
