Juan Mata has revealed that he was taken aback by seeing the positive reception of Manchester United towards Wayne Rooney when the Red Devils took on Everton during the past weekend.
Mata took to his personal blog and wrote, “I want to highlight Wayne Rooney’s return to Old Trafford. He’s part of the Manchester United legend and the crowd gave him the ovation that he deserves when he was substituted.
“Seeing that respect from our fans in the stadium to our former captain was really moving. It makes you feel proud of belonging to this club.
“I think Wayne has still a lot of things to say in football and I wish him the best for the rest of the season.”
Rooney is a club legend at United and is the club’s all-time record goal scorer. He moved back to his boyhood club during the summer after falling down the pecking order at United.
The 31-year-old returned to Old Trafford during the weekend for the first time since leaving and it was certainly not a memorable experience for him as the Toffees ended up losing 4-0.
The Red Devils prevailed through goals from Antonio Valencia, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial.
