Rangers dealt double injury blow in defence ahead of crucial Old Firm clash

Rangers host Celtic this weekend in what is potentially a decider as far as their league chances go this term.

The Gers are currently 5 points behind their bitter rivals after 6 Scottish Premiership games, and a loss at Ibrox on Saturday could further dent their lofty title ambitions.

Manager Pedro Caixinha needs his best legs going into the game, but is being left to sweat the fitness of both his left-backs.

Captain Lee Wallace limped off barely 12 minutes into last Friday’s draw with Partick Thistle, with summer arrival on Cardiff City loanee Declan John coming on as replacement.

However, the Welsh youngster later revealed he is carrying a knock, and could miss Tuesday night’s Betfred Cup quarter-final clash with the Jags.

When asked if he was ready to replace Wallace for weekend’s clash, Declan replied: ‘Of course, I want to play as many minutes as I can. However, I have got a bit of a niggle as well so we will just have to wait and see.’

Should both players remain unavailable for Saturday’s cracker, Caixinha might be forced into reshuffling his defence, with understudy right-back Lee Hodson most likely to come into the equation.

How the 25-year-old fares against Patrick Roberts is better left unimagined, but a weakness at the back is the last thing Rangers need right now as they attempt to pull off a victory against a free-scoring Celtic attack.

Caixinha will hope John manages to shake off his knock just in time.
