Pundit surprised Liverpool did not snap up West Ham star this summer

Joe Hart

West Ham landed somewhat of a marquee signing for a free during the summer window when Manchester City legend Joe Hart arrived London Stadium on a season-long loan.

Letting in 10 goals in his first 4 EPL games isn’t exactly what Hammers fans would have expected. Nevertheless, the England international remains a top goalie.

It’s why ex-England international Phil Neville is amazed Liverpool let such a great chance pass them by, when manager Jurgen Klopp opted against signing Hart.

The German is yet to decide which of Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet would be his number 1 in goal for the season, but Neville believes Hart is an upgrade on the error-prone duo.

Neville told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m surprised he (Klopp) didn’t go out and get Joe Hart. A real top-class, experienced goalkeeper.

“I think he’s (Hart) better than what they’ve got. I think he would have given them a bit of stature at the back.”

While missing out on such a veteran shotstopper remains Liverpool loss, West Ham would hope Hart helps them to more clean sheets this season having kept his first during Monday’s win against Huddersfield.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has made it clear in certain terms that the 30-year-old isn’t in his first-team plans, and have already brought in Claudio Bravo and Ederson.

Hart appears to have played his last game for City, and isn’t expected to return to the team after his loan at West Ham expires.

The club could move to sign him on permanently at the end of the season, and it would definitely be great for them to have such a legend extend his stay beyond next summer.
