Controversial former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has blasted Liverpool and claimed that they will not win any trophies this season because of their poor defending.
After seeing their poor defending highlighted by their 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City last weekend, the Reds once again disappointed as they played out to a 2-2 draw against Sevilla in their Champions League opening match on Wednesday.
The Reds fell behind during the fifth minute of the game after a defensive error by Dejan Lovren allowed Wissam Ben Yeddar to open the scoring for the Spanish club.
Jurgen Klopp’s team managed to fight back and by half time, they led 2-1 through goals from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. In the 72nd minute though, it was Joaquin Correa who found an equalizer for Sevilla by taking advantage of more poor defending by Liverpool.
Whilst speaking about the game to ITV, Keane slammed Liverpool’s backline saying, “This sums up Liverpool in a nutshell, why they are not going to win anything. From a throw-in, just switching off, in an important game at an important moment.
“It must drive the manager crazy as that is schoolboy defending. Liverpool do all the hard stuff really well in terms of creating chances, pace, power and a bit of quality going forward, but the easiest part of football is being switch of defensively and Liverpool don’t seem to be able to do it.”
