Football pundit John Barnes has claimed that Celtic can win a few games in the Champions League this season. The Hoops have been drawn in a difficult group alongside Paris-Saint Germain, Bayern Munich and Anderlecht.
PSG and Munich will be the overwhelming favorites to progress from the group and not many people will be giving Celtic much of a chance.
One thing however, which Rodgers’ men can use to their advantage is their high level of confidence. They won the domestic treble unbeaten last season and are still unbeaten in Scotland since Rodgers became manager last summer.
Though the former Newcastle star Barnes believes that Celtic will not progress to the last 16 of the Champions League, he does believe that they can secure a third place finish in their group and drop to the Europa League.
During an interview with HITC Sport, he said, “If they can go any further, for me it’s a miracle, but I think they can win a couple of games, they can win a couple of games.”
“Of course, they will be aiming for a top two, but of course if they can finish third and go into the Europa League then fine.
“All they can do if play their matches. As we have seen in the past, they have actually gone through the group stages. So with a bit of luck they can, but once again, they are in a difficult group. If they can finish third and go through to the Europa League, that would be fantastic for them.”
