Rodgers admits Celtic were willing to break transfer record to sign attacker this summer

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Manchester City were not willing to sell Patrick Roberts to his club at any price this summer.

Roberts has spent the past two seasons on loan with the Scottish giants and has been largely successful as he helped the club win the domestic treble last season.

Though the Hoops managed to secure him on loan for another year, they were hoping to buy him permanently during the summer and were even prepared to break their previous transfer record of £6 million to do so.

City were not willing to sell Roberts but they did allow him to decide where he would like to go on loan for this season after realizing that he would not feature much for this season.

Rodgers said of Roberts, “We would have broken our transfer record for Patrick. We wanted to find the deal that would get him back here.

“But he’s a Manchester City player. We could have offered them £30m and they would have said no. They didn’t want to sell. So the best option was to get him back on loan.”
