Former Sunderland boss David Moyes has revealed that he proposed to the club’s boss Ellis Short that they splash cash on signing players to bolster the squad this summer but after Short declined his proposal, he decided to resign from the club.

Moyes managed the Black Cats last season as they were relegated from the Premier League after winning just six times from 38 League games.

It was widely accepted that the relegation was not entirely the fault of Moyes as the club did not provide him with sufficient funds to bolster the side and for this season they did not and were not planning to sack him during the season and after relegation.

The former Manchester United and Everton boss however resigned from his post a day after the end of last season after failing to agree with the club’s board. Moyes has now said about his resgination, “I looked at what Newcastle had done to get back up,”

“They had been the biggest spenders in the January before they got relegated. They also spent big in the summer to get back up. I had gone to Ellis with a plan of how to get back up if we got relegated and it had an illustration of what Newcastle had done. But he said he wouldn’t be able to fund it, he didn’t have the money.”

“In the end my decision to resign was both difficult and easy. Ellis’s response made up my mind but at the same time it was difficult because of where I had come from; the way I had been brought up by my dad — you don’t give jobs up, you don’t do that.”
