According to reports, West Ham goalkeeper Joe Hart has been told that he will retain the England first choice position for the team’s World Cup qualifier against Malta on Friday.
Hart has been under pressure recently as the Hammers have been on poor form and he has conceded ten goals so far in the Premier League from just three games.
He was also subjected to criticism during England’s 2-2 draw with Scotland at Hampden Park in June. Despite the 30-year-old Hart not enjoying the best of form recently, Gareth Southgate has opted to stick with him in goal for the game against Malta.
This will be a setback for Stoke City shot-stopper Jack Butland, who would have been hoping to start after returning to fitness.
Hart will need to use this opportunity to deliver. Should his unconvincing run of form continue, he will soon be usurped by either Butland for Jordan Pickford.
