Premier League midfielder admits he considered joining Aston Villa this summer

Gareth Barry has revealed that he had considered turning down West Bromwich after hearing that he had been linked with a move to Aston Villa this summer.

The 36-year-old Barry joined the Baggies this summer after seemingly becoming surplus to requirements at the Toffees. He has however now said that he did consider joining his boyhood club Villa.

The veteran has explained that he considered the prospect of playing again for his boyhood club but decided against it as they do not play in the Premier League.

He said, “Out of respect for Villa I had to give it some thought. But they’re in a different league and it’s eight years ago now so there was nothing to worry about.”

Barry is a graduate of the Villa youth development system and after making his professional debut in 1998, he went on to play 441 times in all competitions for the club, scoring 52 goals.
