Rafa Benitez and his men needed something good to happen for them on Saturday after three straight losses in all competitions to open the season. They got just that, and a little more, with a 3-0 win at St. James’ Park over West Ham. Here are three thoughts from the action:
Wingers impressive on the day
Matt Ritchie and Chrisian Atsu came up big on Saturday to help the Magpies register their first win of the season to send them into the international break with some momentum and something good to look back on. On the opening goal, it was Ritchie’s pressing that won them the ball before Atsu’s driving run in behind and calm pass across lead to an easy finish from Joselu.
In the second half, it was Matt Ritchie again proving vital as he nearly doubled the lead with his run and curling effort that was saved by Joe Hart. Ritchie provided the assist on the second goal, after more good pressing. These two might not seem like they are Premier League ready, but they were instrumental and must be a part of plans going forward.
Strikers take their chances
The three goals that Newcastle scored will not be remembered for how brilliantly struck they were. They were not 40 yard screamers, or bicycle kicks, but they were just as effective.
When the Magpies needed them to come through, both Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic found the back of the net with cool and composed finishes to help seal a very important three points for the collective psyche of everyone on Tyneside. Oh, and center back Ciaran Clark looked like a striker when he headed home the second goal, showing he can also be a threat going forward for them.
Goalkeepers come up big
Joe Hart was very good in goal for the Hammers on the day, and that helped prevent the home side from running up the score even more. On several occasions, the England number one made big saves to try and keep his side in it.
Those nearly paid off when Chicharito almost bundled in a rebound but for Rob Elliot in goal making a fine double save. Both goalkeepers came up trumps, and it allowed the game to end as it did.
