Chelsea boss Conte admits disappointment at Rooney’s decision

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has revealed that he is disappointed by the decision of Everton star Wayne Rooney to retire from international football, though he added that the Toffees will stand to benefit.

The 31-year-old Rooney confirmed his retirement from international football this week.

Following his resurgence since moving to the Toffees this summer, England manager Gareth Southgate is said to have informed Rooney that he would like to recall him to the Three Lions squad.

Whilst talking about Rooney’s decision, Conte said, “Honestly, it’s a pity when there is this type of retirement. When great players are an icon, for football in general, like him and he decides to retire.

“But I think, before taking this decision, he thought a lot. And then he took this decision. We have to respect his decision. Now, Everton… now he’s totally committed to Everton and I think Ronald Koeman will be very happy with this.”
