Sunderland boss handed selection headache by 30-year-old

Robbin Ruiter produced a man of the match display for Sunderland during their 2-1 victory over Carlisle in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday and this is likely to present manager Simon Grayson with a selection dilemma ahead of his sides  Championship encounter with Barnsley this weekend.

Ruiter was given an opportunity during the Carabao Cup encounter and went on to impress as he made a series of world class saves, one of which was from the penalty spot to ensure that the Black Cats advanced to the third round of the competition.

Though Jason Steele started all of the Black Cats previous five games, Ruiter has arguably proven that he may have what it takes to succeed as first choice keeper.

Following the game against Carlisle, Grayson spoke positively about Ruiter saying, “When he was required to make saves, he made them, and that’s why we signed him after the trial period.

“He’d done enough in training and in the two games he played for us [on trial] to make that decision to sign him permanently. It gives us that competition for places that we needed.

“I was pleased with him and I was pleased with quite a lot of the players that came in tonight and who haven’t figured.”
